Fly Tying 2022
Fly tying should be part of any fly fishing club’s activities. We have tried a few times to get some fly tying going as a regular club activity but for one reason or another it hasn’t happened. We have some excellent fly tyers in the club and some new members wanting to learn.
To gauge interest, a fly tying night is proposed for Monday 28th February. Start time would be 6.30pm to 8.00pm. The venue would be North Beach Bowling Club or chosen based on the location of the majority of people wanting to attend.
The night would consist of a guest fly tyer demonstrating how to tie a particular fly. Participants would have the opportunity to tie the same fly with the help of the leader. Materials and hooks needed to tie the fly would be provided. Fly tying kits and vices would be available for those who needed them. This first session will focus on a relatively easy saltwater fly pattern – the gurgler. See Fly Tying on Page 21 for ideas.
To register your interest, you can put your name on the sheet at the next club meeting, or contact Allan by phone or text on 0427457725

Tuesday Fly Tying October 2021
Following casting on Tuesday 26th October there will be a trial of a fly tying session to be held at the Mylestom Hall. The plan is to start at 1.30pm and tie flies for a couple of hours. You can do your own thing or participate in a lesson on how to tie specific flies. This month we will be tying flies for carp at Lake Keepit.
Tuesday casters will already be in town and may like to bring lunch or go the café before the fly tying session starts. Fly tying vices and materials will be available. Those interested in fly tying, but not necessarily casting, can come down in the afternoon to join in.
Fly Tying 2021
This year we are planning to have more fly tying activities and encourage members to get involved in tying their own flies. We hope to be able to run sessions in the south of the area at Macksville and in the north at Coffs or Woolgoolga. There will also be opportunities for people to get together and tie specific flies for club outings. We have some experienced tyers in the club like Walter, Jim and Kevin who we will be calling on from time to time as well as experts from further afield. Check the newsletters and Mid Month Updates for details.
November Fly Tying Competition 2020
We had joint winners of the fly tying competition for the month of November. Congratulations to Ray Phipps and Murray Robinson for their foam creations.
This is the end of the fly tying competition for the year. Thanks to Pip for his work in organizing everything and for making the cabinet of fame in which the flies are displayed. Whether the competition continues next year will depend on member’s interest and Pip’s willingness to do it again.

October Fly Tying Competition 2020
The winner of the fly tying competition for the month of September was Murray Robinson. Murray tied a clouser minnow and won the most votes from the members at the meeting. Murray’s clouser will go on display in the cabinet of fame
This month’s theme for the competition will be a fly made from foam or materials from any craft shop such as Spotlight. Use your imagination and save some money and create a fly that you think will catch fish. Our guest fly tyer this month, Walter Krainik, has whipped up a foam popper using some feathers and foam he had lying around. It’s a quick tie but the fish don’t care and it is guaranteed to work. It doesn’t have a name so you can call it what you like.
This is the last month of the fly tying competition and the last chance to have your fly in the cabinet of fame. If you want to enter you will have to tie two copies of your favourite fly and bring them to the meeting. The fly that gets the most votes at the meeting will be declared the winner. Don’t forget you must bring at least two flies to the meeting. One will be judged and the other one donated as a raffle prize.

July Fly Tying Competition 2020
The winner of the fly tying competition for the month of June was President Doug. This is the third time Doug has taken out the prestigious award but this time he had some close competition. A late entry from master fly tyer, Jim Wray, almost achieved more likes.
Doug’s dry fly of choice was the #22 Parachute Adams. Doug’s winning fly will have the honour of being displayed in our wall of fame.
The competition will have one more month on Facebook before our regular meetings resume in August. This month’s theme for the competition is flies for Australian Salmon. You will have to tie two copies of your go to salmon fly. Photos of the fly are to be posted in our Facebook Group. The fly that gets the most likes will be declared the winner. Let’s see if we can get more entries and topple Doug from his post!
As you will see from our revised calendar we have a Salmon trip planned for August at Swansea. If you are thinking of going you should be stocking up on your Salmon flies now.
Flies to be tied for the coming month’s are:
August … a Popper
September … Prawn or Yabby Pattern

June Fly Tying Competition 2020
The winner of the fly tying competition for the month of May was President Doug. This is the second time Doug has taken out the prestigious award proving he is a top notch fly tyer. Doug’s chosen pattern was a Donnie Brasco; a fly that works well on Bass and Golden Perch in impoundments and rivers. This fly is all about movement, from the Streamer Hair collar through to the rabbit tail. Cast these into the weed pockets, rocky points and standing timber and hang on.
Congratulation to Doug on another win. He tells me he doesn’t want another sheep station so he will just have to accept the honour of having his flies displayed in our cabinet of fame.
There won’t be a meeting in June but the fly tying competition will still go ahead. Instead of bringing your flies to the meeting you will have to post a photo in our Facebook Group.

You will have to tie 2 flies following this month’s theme of dry flies for trout.

There will be no more Monday night fly tying sessions. We are not abandoning fly tying as a club activity. In the future we plan to hold weekend workshops and have fly tying on some of our regular meeting nights. A special thanks to Jim Wray for leading this group and sharing his experience and knowledge over the years the group has been meeting.

At each meeting for the next few months members will be encouraged to enter two identical flies they have tied to be judged by all the members present at the meeting. The winner will have the honour of having a photo of their flies on our Facebook Page and in the next newsletter.
The reason for two flies is to ensure that the first one wasn’t a fluke and to discourage people from buying their flies which would be costly and against the rules.
The fly to be tied for the March meeting is a carp fly. Carp eat just about any fly on their day but the winner will be chosen for its simplicity, creativity and proven carp attracting qualities.
In the spirit of fun and fairness please abide by the following rules:

In the spirit of fun and fairness please abide by the following rules:
- You must be a financial member to enter.
- You must submit two identical samples (tied by yourself) of the fly. Entries can be in plastic bags or clear plastic containers labeled with your name and the name of the fly (extra points for creativity in naming the fly). Entries are to be given to Pip Bevan before the start of the monthly meeting.
- Each club member may only enter twice each month; that is two lots of two flies tied to meet the theme for that month.
- Members unable to make the meeting can post their flies to the Secretary, 11 Butterfly Close, Boambee East 2452. Allow at least 5 days for flies to arrive.
- The submitted flies will be displayed to members at the meeting and a vote taken. The winner will be determined by popular vote.
- So you can plan ahead and start tying your flies here is what’s to come:
April ….. Trout flies (Wet)
May …. Bass flies
June … Trout flies (Dry)
July … Australian Salmon flies
Fly Tying June 2019
Numbers attending our fly tying nights are dwindling and the cost of hiring the hall and other expenses is not being met by income. The Committee has decided to try a different approach to fly tying in the future. More on that later.
In the meantime there will be one last fly tying night at the Uniting Church Hall in Coffs Harbour commencing at 7.00pm on Monday 3rd June. We won’t be tying any particular pattern but responding to requests from members. So far interest has been expressed in tying bread flies and weed flies. If you have a request contact the secretary so that hooks and materials can be organized. You don’t have to restrict yourself to these flies so you can come along and tie your own patterns or maybe watch and learn from the experienced members.
As is the case with nearly every fly we tie there are many variations to the pattern. Here are a couple of videos to get you started:
The Bread Fly
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rb69KGiPpzc
The Weed Fly
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gpT-zytNjgc
For the beginners in the group there will be individual instruction on fly tying basics. Hooks and materials will be supplied if you let us know what you need. Spare vices are available. There will be no cost for our last night and there might even be some chocolate biscuits for supper!
We are not abandoning fly tying as a club activity. In the future we plan to hold weekend workshops and have fly tying on some of our regular meeting nights. Learning to tie your own flies is an important part of becoming a successful fly fisher. Everyone should have a go at some time or at least watch someone tying flies.

Fly Tying May 2019
Fly tying resumes this month with Jim back at the helm. It will be held at the Uniting Church Hall in Coffs commencing at 7.00pm on Monday 6th May. We will be tying some trout flies in preparation for the trip to Dunmore Waters in July.
For the beginners in the group there will be individual instruction on fly tying basics. All the hooks and materials needed will be supplied and spare vices are available. A donation of $5 is requested to pay for the hire of the hall and the tying materials.
A number of different flies will be tied on the night including a Hare and Copper. The Hare and Copper nymph is probably the most popular nymph pattern used to fish for trout in New Zealand and is not far behind in Australia. It is relatively easy to tie. There are numerous variations with different coloured beads, body shapes, and the like to suggest different insects from mayflies to drowned spinners, hatching caddis and even dragonfly nymphs.

February 2019 Fly Tying
The first fly tying night for the year will be Monday 4th February at the Uniting Church Hall in Coffs Harbour commencing at 7.00pm. The theme for the night is using UV Resins. We have invited new member Brent Hawkins to demonstrate some of the saltwater patterns he has been tying with resin. Jim will then be helping us all tie a simple baitfish pattern using resin.
If you have 15 minutes to spare and you are a perfectionist you may want to watch this video on tying a baitfish pattern with resin.

Fly Tying Monday 6th March 2017
The next fly tying night will be held on Monday 6th March. The venue will be the Uniting Church Fellowship Centre in Gordon Street Coffs Harbour. Starting time will be 7.00pm. A $5 donation is requested to pay for hall hire, tea/coffee and materials for fly tying. You are reminded that you must be a financial member of the club to be covered by our insurance when you attend fly tying nights.
Our guest fly tyer this month will be Jim Wray. Jim has chosen the Stimulator as his pattern to tie. The Stimulator is a dry fly used for trout representing their diet of stoneflies, grasshoppers and cicadas. This is a really buoyant fly and is great for searching in all waters.
Most people think Randall Kaufmann invented the Stimulator, but the question seems up for debate. The fly’s true originator may be Jim Slattery, who claims that he first tied the stonefly pattern in 1980. Based on the Sofa Pillow, Slattery’s fly was originally called the Fluttering Stonefly, but he renamed it the Stimulator after a New York City punk-rock group. Whoever can get credit for inventing it, it has become an incredibly popular stonefly imitation and all-around attractor fly.
All the materials you will need will be supplied and spare vices will be available. For those who are just starting in tying flies Jim will be also be tying an Elk Hair Caddis which is another good dry fly but a simpler fly to tie.

Our guest tyer will be Peter Elks. Peter will be tying Woolly Buggers in a variety of styles. In his article for FlyLife Magazine back in spring 2002 Peter wrote of the Woolly Bugger as being a fly for “Emergency Use Only”. I have had plenty of emergencies in my fly fishing career and wouldn’t go fishing in fresh or saltwater without a woolly bugger in my fly box
All the materials you will need will be supplied and spare vices will be available. If you want to get your own materials here is a list of what you will need:
Thread: 8/0 -6/0 to match dubbing colour
Hook: Daiichi 1850 or 220 size of choice (size 8 for us)
Bead: Gold tungsten bead (brass optional)
Rib: Gold wire
Tail: Marabou, colour of choice
Flash (tail): Pearl Kyrstal/Sparkle Flash or similar
Body: Spirit River Steelhead Dubbing colour of choice
Collar: As for body, colour red
Hackle: Appropriate size saddle or neck in colour of choice
This is the pattern Peter featured in FlyLife Magazine. Feel free to substitute.

No Fly Tying Monday 3rd October
There will be no fly tying for the month of October due to the regular tying night (1st Monday of the month) being a public holiday. Fly tying will resume on Monday 7th November.
The next fly tying night will be held on Monday 1st August at the Uniting Church Hall in Coffs Harbour commencing at 7.00pm. This month we are not actually tying a fly. If you fish nymphs for trout or weed flies for blackfish you have probably used some form of floating indicator to keep your fly off the bottom and detect a take. There are plenty of options when it comes to indicators but one of the best is this one tied by Peter Elks. Peter will be demonstrating how to tie his indicator as featured in the FlyLife Magazine Volume 25 a few years ago. I’ve tried all the other indicators out there but this is the one I use exclusively.
Fly Tying Monday 4th July
Another fly tying night will be held on Monday 4th July. The venue will be the Uniting Church Fellowship Centre in Gordon Street Coffs Harbour. Please be aware of the changed traffic conditions around Gordon Street. Starting time will be 7.00pm. A $5 donation is requested to pay for hall hire, tea/coffee and materials for fly tying. This month we will be tying a Gartside Gurgler. All the materials you will need to tie a couple of flies on the night will be supplied and spare vices will be available. If you want to get your own materials here is a list of what you will need:
Hook: Mustad #34011 or 34007 (SW), sizes 4-2/0
Thread: Danville's 3/0 or Monocord, white
Tail: Very sparse bucktail or marabou plumes overlaid with five or six strands of pearl Glimmer or Krystal Flash
Body: White closed-cell foam, with five evenly-spaced segments. Foam should be 1/2"-5/8" wide for most flies. Use foam at least 1/8" thick.
Rib: White or Grizzly saddle hackle palmered between segments
Carapace or Shell: Closed-cell foam pulled over body and secured just behind eye.Trim foam leaving an excess of about 1/2" protruding beyond eye.

As with anything to do with fly tying you can change hook brands, colours, sizes and materials to suit.
Fly Tying Nights
A few people have expressed interest in having fly tying nights where we can learn about tying flies for fresh and saltwater. Mondays seem to work for our general meeting so fly tying nights will be held on the first Monday of the month commencing on 2nd May. To begin with we will just have informal fly tying with a theme and everyone can come along and share their knowledge or learn from others. The theme for Monday 2nd will be clousers. Vices and tying material will be available for those who need them.
The venue will be the Uniting Church Fellowship Centre in Gordon Street Coffs Harbour (see map HERE). Starting time will be 7.00pm. To cover the cost of hall hire there will have to be a charge and this will be decided when we know how many people will attend. The cost will be capped at $5 and will include the cost of any materials people might need. The more people who attend the lower we can make the cost.
If you are interested in attending please email [email protected] . If fly tying nights become established we have access to some well known fly tyers in the area who are willing to come along and share their tying skills.

The Clouser Deep Minnow
If you are coming to the fly tying night on Monday 2nd May we will be tying the Clouser Deep Minnow. The original Clouser evolved from traditional bucktail streamers and was created in 1987 by Bob Clouser, a Pennsylvania fly shop owner and guide. The original patterns were intended for smallmouth bass. Today, the Clouser Deep Minnow is widely used for many species of both fresh and saltwater game fish. Lefty Kreh claims to have caught over 87 species of game fish on Clouser Deep Minnow flies.
If you want to see the clouser tied by Bob Clouser himself take a look at this YouTube video:
