April 2024 Outings
A club outing to Stuarts Point on the Macleay River has been planned for Saturday 6th April. The long range weather forecast is not looking good, so make sure you are registered so you can be contacted if it has to be cancelled.

March 2024 Outings
March Bass Outing
On Saturday 9th March we have a club trip
to Taylors Arm. Doug will be organizing this outing so we can fish his creek and nearby properties for bass. You will be able to fish from the bank (limited spots) or from a canoe or kayak.
You can fish the dawn session, the middle of the day or in the evening (or all day if you wish). Just let Doug know when you register. You must register by phoning Doug on 0458696138 or putting your name on the outing sheet. Because of the restricted access to creeks, the trip will be limited to 8. A BBQ will be operating on the day for breakfast and lunch.
March Cod Trip
Chris Russell is organizing a camping trip to Ashford in the New England Tablelands to fish for Murray Cod. The outing will start on Saturday 23rd March and finish on Monday 25th March.
You will be responsible for your own transport, food and camping facilities. Chris has arranged a camp site on a private property next to the Severn River. You can fish from the bank or canoe/kayak.
Places will be limited to 8 so you will need to register quickly. You can register by putting your name in the Outings Folder or contacting Chris on 0412 460 539.
To catch a Murray Cod on fly you will need an 8-10 weight rod, solid reel, and a fly line capable of casting big cod flies. When you register you will get more information on what fishing gear to take and directions of how to get there.

Those with boats can launch wherever and whenever you like but someone will be at the ramp at Mylestom from 7.00am to give you a hand if you need one. We plan to meet back at the oval at Mylestom at 12.30pm for a free hot dog for lunch.
For those without a boat or kayak there will be opportunities to be taken to some flats for wading. When you register make sure you indicate if you have a spare seat in your boat or you need a ride.
To register or for more information contact Glenn on 0409151270.

November Outings 2023
November outing change of venue. The November 9th outing to Mylestom has been changed to Gordonville Crossing on the Bellinger River. The target species will be Bass and Herring. Contact Glenn for further details and make sure you register if you want lunch.
Lunch will be free hot dogs and coffee from 12.30pm provided you have registered. Glenn will be coordinating this outing and you can phone him on 0409151270 to register or find out more.
Lake KeepitThe Lake Keepit trip is on this month and we already have sixteen members registered. As everyone will be responsible for their own accommodation, there is no limit to the number of people who can attend. The dates are from Tuesday 21stNovember to Sunday 26th November but you can go anytime during that period.
Catching carp on fly is a great way to hone your fly fishing skills and have some fun. They are not easy to catch but there are plenty of them and you are sure to land one if you put in the time. If you haven’t been before, one of the regulars will take you under their wing and help you catch your first carp on fly.
We will be staying at Lake Keepit Holiday Park. Those attending will be responsible for making their own bookings but if you register in the outings book, we can coordinate and keep our group together. If you want to book a cabin, find a few friends who are going and make a booking soon.
You will pay $197 per night for a Standard Cabin, $128 for an Economy Cabin, $48 for a powered campsite, $35 for an unpowered campsite and $26 for bush camping. Rates are based on 2 adults and increase for additional people on site. Additional cars and boats on site may attract an extra fee.
You will be responsible for your own transport so you may like to car pool. A boat will be helpful to get you away from the crowds but most of your fishing will be walking the shore. This will be a self-catered trip but we will be using the barbecue facilities at the park some nights.
Tom Trefz (0423676624) is coordinating this outing so contact him for more information or to register.
October Outings 2023
As the Flats Workshop is unable to go ahead on Saturday 7th October, we will be having an outing at Mylestom instead. You can fish the Bellinger or Kalang Rivers but most people will focus on the Bellinger as it is closer to Mylestom where we will be meeting for lunch afterwards. You can launch whenever you like but I will be at the ramp at 7.00am if you need any help.
A boat, canoe, kayak or SUP is almost essential for fishing the Bellinger. If you don't have a vessel or can't arrange to be a crew member, please let me know a least a few days before so I can try and organize something. If we don't have enough boats, I will ferry people to the flats to fish from the shore.
Lunch will be free hot dogs and coffee at the Mylestom Cricket Oval from 12.30pm. Anthony and I will be coordinating this outing and you can phone me on 0427457725 or Anthony on 0402560880 to register or find out more.
Fishermans Reach
We had planned to have a weekend at Grafton from Friday 20th to Sunday 22nd October. Unfortunately, it has been cancelled due to circumstances beyond our control.
A replacement trip has been put together to go to Fisherman's Reach that weekend. House in Fisherman's Reach has been booked on the river near the boat ramp. There are only 6 places and the cost will be $125 each for the weekend. If you are interested you must contact Mike (0428636858) to book one of the six places. You will need to pay a deposit of $50 into the club account by 14thOctober.
If you miss out on a place in the house, or you don’t want to go for the whole weekend, you can make a day trip on Saturday 21st. If you register, we can plan to meet up during the day.
Fisherman's Reach provides access to the Macleay River from Stuarts Point to South West Rocks. The accommodation has parking for boats and trailers and there is a wharf out the front to moor boats. Two boat ramps are within close proximity to the property. The modest brick home will sleep 6. The master bedroom has an ensuite shower and toilet and there is a second bathroom. There are 3 bedrooms in all with double beds but we can take our own swags and stretchers. The lounge folds out into a sofa bed. Linen is provided. BBQ facilities available on the rear veranda.

September 2023 Outings
There are two outings planned for September and they are ones you won't want to miss.
On Saturday 2nd September we will be holding the inaugural Battle of the Bread Fly. This is a fun competition taking over from the Mullet Mash. Your mission, if you choose to accept it, is to catch as many difference species as you can on a bread fly. The emphasis is on having fun and catching and releasing plenty of fish. The details are on page 14. If you haven't yet registered you need to do so as soon as possible so flies can be tied for you and food bought for the lunch. The cost is $10 which includes 5 bread flies, a loaf of bread for burley and hot dogs for lunch. A special thanks to John Everett for helping tie the bread flies.
The second outing for September is the Gathering @ Gumma. It will be held from Thursday 7th to Sunday 10th at the Gumma Reserve via Macksville. Pip will be there from Thursday to secure tent sites for those who wish to camp. You can attend for a day, the weekend or the whole four days.
Bring your own food and camping equipment if you intend to stay. The club will provide facilities for morning and afternoon tea each day from Friday and a sausage sizzle on Saturday night.
Bring your boat, canoe, kayak, SUP or fish from the bank. Come for the day or stay for a while. There is no cost for day visits. Camp sites are $17 single or $22 double per night. There are no bookings so get there early if you want to pick your camp site.
Please register for this event so we know who is coming.
If you intend camping you should read the latest information from the Nambucca Council.

August 2023 Outings
There is only one outing this month and that is the Swansea Salmon Classic. All the details were in the last newsletter and if you want to go you need to register with Jeff at the Hunter Valley Fly Fishing Club as soon as possible. At this stage, there are 5 of our members attending.
The Tuesday casting group has a fishing outing each month to put their casting skills into practice. You don't have to be a member of the casting group to attend these outing. They are not advertised as Club Outings but anyone can join in. There is no set venue or date as the group makes the decision about when and where they would like to go fishing. It's always land based and not too far from home so we can have morning tea and a sausage sizzle lunch and be home for afternoon tea.
This month we are fishing at Valla Beach on Tuesday 22nd August. Anyone is welcome to come along.
If you want to register or find out more information, just get in contact. You need to let us know if you are coming for catering purposes as the morning tea and lunch are provided free of charge from the donations we collect in the coffee jar each week at casting.

Hopefully, this time the weather will be kind to us and we will be able to get on the water and start on the Grand Slam Awards.
You can launch wherever and whenever you like but someone will be at the ramp at Mylestom from 7.00am to give you hand if you need one. Low tide is 5.00am. We plan to meet back at the oval at Mylestom at 12.30pm for a sausage sizzle lunch ($5).
For those without a boat or kayak there will be opportunities to be taken to some flats for wading. When you register make sure you indicate if you have a spare seat in your boat or you need a ride.
To register or for more information contact Allan on 0427457725. You must register if you want lunch.

October 2022 Outings
Grafton Bass Weekend
We have booked an Airbnb on the banks of the Clarence River at Grafton for the weekend of 14th to 16th October. All places have been filled for this trip but if you want to place your name on the waiting list you never know your luck. A couple of people are still to pay their deposits so there may be an opening for someone on the waiting list.
The house only has double beds so we will be taking stretchers and sleeping bags. The cost will be around $80 for the weekend. Everyone will be responsible for organizing their own breakfast and lunch but we plan to go into Grafton for both evening meals.
There is a launching ramp on the property for those taking a boat. You will be able to arrive and launch anytime on Friday but you won't be able to get into the house until 2.00pm. You can fish as long as you like on the Sunday but we have to out of the house by 10.00am.
If you don't want to fish all day Friday you might like to have a tour of the Grafton Fisheries Centre first (see below)
Grafton Fisheries Centre Visit
The Grafton Fisheries Centre is part of the Primary Industries Institute located at Trenayr, north of Grafton. A tour of the facility has been organized on Friday 14th October at 10.00am for any members interested in going. Some of us will be travelling to Grafton that weekend for a bass outing, so it might be a good way to start the weekend and maybe see a bass!
The facility plays an important role in ensuring the survival of the state’s endangered freshwater fish species. The hatchery is equipped with temperature controlled holding and spawning tanks, larval rearing facilities and nineteen ponds with screened inlets and outlets to accommodate fish from five threatened species, including the eastern freshwater cod, which is only found in the Clarence Valley.
If you are interested in joining the tour you need to let me know (0427457725) as soon as possible. There is no cost. If a few people are interested a car pool could be arranged.
Flats Fly Fishing workshop
Garry Hambly, owner and founder of South Pacific Fly Rods Australia, and operator of A1FlyFishing.com.au will be conducting a Flats Fly Fishing workshop at Woolgoolga Lake on Saturday 29th October. The workshop will commence at 8.00am sharp in the Woolgoolga Lake BBQ Reserve, at the end of Lake Road, and finish at 12 noon. Morning tea will be provided. Bring your lunch and stay on to fish in the afternoon. There is no cost.
Garry will be explaining the complexities of Flats Fishing. Woolgoolga Lake is one of the many ICOLLS (Intermittently Closed and Open Lakes and Lagoons) along the east coast, and fully understanding their variables is the secret to successful fishing.
The morning will include:

February 2022 Outing
We have a bass outing planned for Saturday 19th February. President Doug will be organizing this so we can fish his creek and nearby properties. You will be able to fish from the bank (limited spots) or from a canoe or kayak. Those who want to venture further afield can travel to Warrell Creek or the Bellingen River.
At this stage the water conditions are not really ideal and a decision to go ahead will be made by the Committee closer to the date. If conditions are not suitable for bass, an alternate outing will be arranged – possibly to Valla Beach.
More details will be in the Mid-Month Update and posted on Facebook and our website.

All places are now taken so you will need to put your name down for next year just as soon as the dates are advertised. This trip is always well supported as it is a great opportunity to catch a large fish on fly involving all the stalking, sight fishing, hooking and playing skills you need to learn as a fly fisher. It’s also a great social event where everyone enjoys the camaraderie, good food and a few laughs.

February 2021 Outings
By the time you read this the annual Tasmanian trip will be underway.
Our first local outing kicks off on Saturday 20th February with a family fishing day at Mylestom. The focus will be on introducing kids and others to fishing our Home Waters. It won’t be just fly fishing but we will make it fly friendly for those who want to have a go.
The plan is to meet at the boat ramp at Mylestom at 9.00am where we will organize to take everyone by boat to the sand flats at the mouth of the river. There we will pump some yabbies (low tide is 10.30am) and do some bait fishing for bream, whiting and flathead. For those who are too lazy to pump yabbies (like me) we will have some worms and of course fly rods.
Lunch will be provided in the form of sausage sandwiches back at the park near the boat ramp where there will be access to toilets. After lunch those who are still keen can return to fishing.
This is a chance for members to bring along their family and friends and introduce them to fishing the beautiful Bellinger River. Fishing is fishing whether you do it with a bait, spinning or fly rod. Everyone should experience the fun and relaxation that fishing can bring.
You must register for this so we can arrange, bait, food, equipment and boats for everyone. To register put your name down at the next meeting of call Club Captain David or Allan.

Our November outing will be on Saturday 21st. This will be a Bass day on the Bellinger River. You must register for this outing before our next meeting on 16th.
The main focus of the day will be bass fishing from canoes and kayaks on the Bellinger River. You will also have the option of boat fishing in the saltwater lower section of the river.
To make it fair for all those who want to canoe the Bellinger, the river will be divided into beats. You will be expected to fish your beat and leave the other areas for fellow members. Beats will be drawn from a hat at our November meeting. The beats will start at:
1. First bridge Darkwood Rd to Thora Shop
2. Thora Shop to Gordonville Crossing
3. Gordonville Crossing to Bellingen
4. Bellingen to Brownlees Lane, including Hyde’s Creek
If we have a lot of interest we will also use beats on the Kalang River and Deep Creek to accommodate extra canoes/kayaks.
We will be allocating two anglers to each beat either in a double canoe or two canoe/kayaks. This is for safety purposes and also provides the flexibility to take two vehicles to separate put in and pull out points.
Start time will be 5.30am and the plan is for everyone to finish up at Fernmount for lunch at 1.00pm. Meeting place at Fernmount will be Nicholson Street (as shown on Google Earth) or Brownlees lane as known locally.
For those without canoes we will have a few spares or there will be the option of fishing saltwater. Those interested in saltwater, and not wanting to canoe, can launch boats and fish the lower river and finish up at Fernmount for lunch.
Registration is a must for this event so we can work out beats, boats and canoes. Registrations will close on the night of our November 16th meeting. If you need further information or want to register, contact David on 0411723221 or Allan on 0427457725.

September Outings
The fly tying Workshop with Brett Clarke has been postponed until next year.
Our planned September outing to Eatonsville on the Clarence River has been changed.
Our September outing will be to our Home Waters at Mylestom on Saturday 19th September. Our target species will be bream, mullet, trevally and anything else you can catch. You can start whenever you like. If you need help some members will be at the boat ramp opposite the football field at Mylestom at 7.00am. Finish will be 12.30pm followed by a sausage sizzle in the park. Saturdays can be busy at the ramp at Mylestom so you may want to get there early to beat the dragon boat racers. There is plenty of parking at the northern end of the park where will be meeting afterwards.
Fishing will be from bank, boat or kayak. Those without a vessel will be taken to the sand flats by boat. Those with boats can arrange your own partners or let us know and we will match up anyone looking for a ride.
We would like lots of photos for Facebook and the newsletter so please use your camera or smart phone to record fish caught, people, boats and the scenery.
As a fly fishing club we encourage everyone to use a fly rod but if it is very windy or you really want to catch a fish you can bring your spin stick. Catch and release is optional as long as you abide by NSW fishing rules.
This is a social day out as well as a chance to learn more about fly fishing. If you need help with flies, where to fish or how to fish please ask. Make an effort to stay for the sausage sizzle where you will be able to talk to other members about what worked and what didn’t.
A Covid Safe policy will be in place so we are limited to 20 members and of course everyone must social distance and follow good hygiene practices (see club policy).
There is no registration fee but we do ask for a gold coin donation for the sausage sizzle.
You MUST register for this event by 17th September to give us time to arrange boats and organize food.
The Trout Workshop planned for 10th October at Ebor has been cancelled.
August Outings 2020
Our August outing will be to our Home waters at Urunga. It will be a fun day with the emphasis on learning and improving our casting. You can attend as a captain with your boat or as a crew member. We will make sure everyone who registers is matched up with a partner to learn all about catching mullet on bread flies. You might think fly fishing for mullet is a bit “Mickey Mouse” but if you want to improve your casting skills you shouldn’t miss Saturday 8th August. You can download all the information here.
In light of the Covid-19 cases in Port Stephens and the Sydney outbreak not yet being under control, the club Executive has made the decision to cancel the Swansea Salmon outing. This will disappoint those keen to catch an Australian Salmon on fly but the safety and wellbeing of our members is more important. There will be another chance to go to Swansea next year.
